OPENING ESSAYFIRST PRINCIPLES

Across 93 moves, capital kept identifying the infrastructure, evidence, and operating systems that could no longer be postponed.

Every period of rapid innovation eventually reveals the system built for the version that came before it.

AI has reached that point. The models keep improving, the interfaces keep multiplying, and demand keeps moving upward. Underneath that progress, the physical stack is being asked to absorb a different scale of work: denser compute, more memory, faster networking, larger data centers, more power, more cooling, and more manufacturing.

Andreessen Horowitz put $1.1B behind that pressure last week through the Machine Age Fund. The firm is treating hardware as an official investing motion and extending the mandate across chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers, robotics, home AI appliances, materials, cooling, electrical systems, real estate, and power.

The rest of the week carried the same operating question into very different markets. Industrial companies financed factories and physical output. Healthcare companies financed the evidence required to move scientific possibility toward patient use. Software companies financed the controls and context required to let systems act without losing accountability. Debt structures tied capital to equipment, contracts, and utilization. Acquisitions moved responsibility from one owner to another.

Across 93 distinct moves, the check kept pointing toward the system underneath the promise.

Capital can extend runway, fund capacity, recruit talent, build equipment, open a market, or place a larger institution behind a category. The work after the announcement determines whether the system can carry what the capital has asked it to become.

This Weekly Record follows that handoff from formation into building, connection, deployment, control, and proof.

CAPITAL CONTROLTHE PATTERN BEHIND THE TRANSACTIONS

Separate the Capital Before Reading the Week

Fifty-six exact current company financings totaled $3.0107B. Closed U.S.-dollar fund capital reached $2.91B across six vehicles after the Machine Age Fund joined the week, while RunwayVC reached a separate EUR40M first close.

Six loans, notes, and credit structures carried $3.306B of disclosed face value or capacity. Those structures range from funded debt to an up-to facility, so the total describes the size of the instruments rather than equity raised or cash already deployed.

Eight acquisitions also entered the week. Francisco Partners and Weave, together with Visa and BioCatch, carried approximately $3.05B of disclosed consideration. Six other transactions had official terms undisclosed. Ownership changed in each case; the operating evidence will arrive through integration, retained trust, and execution under the new structure.

The capital lanes stay separate because they assign different work. Company financing supports execution inside one business. Fund capital creates an allocation mandate. Debt has to remain synchronized with assets and cash flows. An acquisition transfers responsibility before it reveals whether the combination worked.

Andreessen Horowitz announced on August 28 that it raised $1.1B for the Machine Age Fund, a new vehicle focused on the computer infrastructure and physical systems beneath AI.

The mandate reaches across chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers, robotics, home AI appliances, cooling, materials, electrical systems, real estate, and power. The firm sees the physical stack colliding with the limits of supply chains, physics, and systems built for an earlier compute cycle.

The close gives a16z an allocation mandate. The record will continue through the companies selected, the ownership taken, the customers reached, the manufacturing progress made, and the physical output delivered.

Ben Horowitz, Martin Casado, Raghu Raghuram, David Ulevitch, and David George signed the announcement. The firm says hardware has grown to more than 20% of recent deal flow and is now becoming an official investing motion supported by a16z's go-to-market, talent, and marketing systems.

The fund makes the week's pressure visible at institutional scale. Intelligence is asking more of electricity, materials, heat management, manufacturing, and the systems that bind them together. The next record begins when the fund reaches the companies rebuilding those limits.

Fifty-six exact current company financings totaled $3.0107B. Closed U.S.-dollar fund capital reached $2.91B across six vehicles after the Machine Age Fund joined the week, while RunwayVC reached a separate EUR40M first close.

Harvey Moves From Capital Into Firmwide Legal Work

Harvey announced deployments with Nelson Mullins, Jackson Lewis, FBT Gibbons, and Finnegan between August 24 and August 27. Legal-AI access is widening across firms.

WHY IT CHANGES THE PICTURE

The work now shifts toward productivity, accuracy, client outcomes, and return on investment inside daily practice.

Base Power Opens Its Rate to Batteries It Did Not Install

Base says Texas customers with an existing Tesla, Franklin, Enphase, or other home battery can enroll in its energy-and-battery plan without a Base installation. The boundary is widening from proprietary hardware toward retail electricity and battery orchestration.

WHY IT CHANGES THE PICTURE

Enrollment opens the product; adoption and grid performance will tell us how far it travels.

03FORMATION

Rillet Builds the Room Around Agent Accountability

Rillet Recon is scheduled for September 23 in San Francisco as a one-day gathering for 250 finance leaders.

WHY IT CHANGES THE PICTURE

The program centers on adoption, controls, customer use, IPO readiness, and who remains accountable when agents act inside the books.

THE CAPITAL MEMOSCOMPANY-BY-COMPANY INTELLIGENCE

Andreessen Horowitz Puts $1.1B Behind AI's Physical Foundation

For years, hardware founders heard the same venture sermon: too much capital, too much time, and too many ways for physics to ruin a spreadsheet.

Artificial intelligence has made that sermon awkward.

Andreessen Horowitz has raised $1.1B for the Machine Age Fund, a new vehicle covering the physical stack on which AI runs: chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers, robotics, cooling, materials, electrical systems, power, and real estate.

The firm is also making hardware an official investment motion. A dedicated vehicle changes what a16z is promising founders. The pitch now extends beyond capital into customer introductions, supplier access, recruiting, marketing, and go-to-market support for businesses where a delayed component or unavailable megawatt can shape the product roadmap.

Five senior investors put their names on the announcement. Ben Horowitz is a16z's cofounder and general partner. Martin Casado leads Infrastructure. Raghu Raghuram is a managing partner and works across Growth and Infrastructure. David Ulevitch leads American Dynamism. David George leads Growth.

Their thesis starts with a constraint software cannot abstract away. a16z says compute density increased 28X between an NVIDIA H100 rack and a Rubin rack. Rack power moved from roughly 5-10 kW to 100-250 kW, with 1 MW racks expected within three years. NVIDIA has separately described power architecture designed for 1 MW IT racks beginning in 2027.

More intelligence means more demand for memory bandwidth, interconnects, cooling, power conversion, grid capacity, copper, and buildings.

Founders appear to be moving first. a16z says hardware startups have grown from a small share of its deal flow to more than 20%. The firm points to recent investments in Unconventional AI, Nexthop, Volta, Atoms, Heron Power, and Mind Robotics, plus earlier bets on Skydio, SpaceX, Anduril, and Waymo.

The fund arrives seven months after a16z announced more than $15B across American Dynamism, Apps, Bio + Health, Infrastructure, Growth, and other venture strategies. The firm has not disclosed the Machine Age Fund's LPs, check sizes, stage allocation, deployment pace, or overlap with those pools.

That leaves founders with the important part to test. A software-famous venture firm has built a large new door for hardware companies. The value of that door will be measured in whether suppliers answer, customers arrive sooner, and the physical work around AI becomes a little less lonely to finance.

THE CLOSING SIGNAL

The capital arrived first. The system still has to carry the assignment.

The week's 93 moves pointed toward layers that have started limiting what the next generation of companies can do. Factories, clinical programs, software controls, infrastructure systems, customers, and new owners now have to turn the financial record into operating evidence.
